8 ways to keep baby happy in the summer

Warm weather is finally here in the Midwest! Summer is such a fun time to spend with kids, but summer babies can be cranky if they’re hot, sunburned, or have irritated skin. You can keep everybody in your family cool, happy, and safe by staying on top of the following 8 things.

8 tips on how to enjoy the summer with your baby via @DashOfEvans

  1. Sun protection. Lots of it! We have an “outdoor” basket in our bathroom that has sunscreen, sunglasses, and aloe. Since my older children spend most of their days outside in the summer, right after breakfast they apply their first layer of sunscreen. We re-apply every 2-3 hours, just to be on the safe side, and all wear sun hats. For little ones, sun care is especially important. I keep infant sunscreen in my purse, at the changing table, and in the bathroom. It can be hard to apply to a squirmy baby, but just take your time and don’t forget their ears. If we’re going swimming, I choose a rash guard/long-sleeve option whenever I can.
  2. Create safe outdoor areas. A play yard, especially with a canopy on it, is so handy to have when you’re outside. Your baby can play inside safely, yet still enjoy the weather and breeze. We have one that folds up into the size of a stadium chair and I can’t wait to use it for outdoor concerts or at the beach. If you’re going to be swimming a lot, a baby float with a sunshade on it is super handy.
  3. Moisturize. Summer brings dry skin, so I swear by Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment. My three older kids apply it after their showers and Liam, my little one, gets a rubdown after his bath. I keep a tub right by the changing table to quickly reapply during the day. Liam gets redness on his chin and chest from drooling — but not if I remember to reapply the Aquaphor during the day.
  4. Always pack extra clothes, wipes, diapers. For some reason, it seems we have more clothing accidents in the summer. I always make sure my diaper bag has 2 extra outfits and more than enough wipes and diapers. Hand wipes are great for any post-treat stickiness. To get sand off our feet, I keep powder in the car — it truly works!
  5. Parents need to keep cool too. If you’re going to be using the baby carrier, do yourself a favor and spray your body with some powder to help absorb moisture. I find it right in the deodorant aisle and it’s so helpful. Smoldering heat + Sweaty baby = Suuuuper sweaty Mama. I also like to pack plain coffee filters to use as a shine/sweat reducing pad. It doesn’t even smear your makeup, if you’re wearing any!
  6. Keep redness away. Summer heat makes your little one’s diaper a little more sweaty. Every diaper change, I cover the whole area with Aquaphor Baby 3in1 Diaper Rash Cream. It’s easy to apply and keeps redness at bay. I always carry one with me in my purse and in my diaper bag, too.
  7. Water. Both you and your little ones need to stay hydrated. I like to keep a sippy cup with ice-cold water on hand, as well as regular bottles of water. Freezing a washcloth or baby wipes is a quick way to help cool little hands or faces down.
  8. Enjoy the weather. Here in the Midwest, the warm weather doesn’t last long. I always try to embrace summer. After dinner, as it starts to cool down, we take the whole family (including the dog) out for a long walk to explore. This is a great way to get your baby to unwind for bedtime and experience a bit of the natural world.
