San Francisco 49ers receiver, Marquise Goodwin, fell to his knees in the end zone on Sunday, following an 83-yard touchdown reception. Ultimately, the 49ers went on to defeat the New York Giants 31-21 — the team’s first win of the season. But, little did fans know that Goodwin’s emotional display went beyond the game.
It wasn’t until after the game that he revealed what was really going on in that moment: Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, had lost their baby boy.
In a devastating Instagram post, Goodwin shared a photo of his baby’s hand grasping onto a finger. The pro football player explained that his wife had given birth to their son prematurely after a difficult pregnancy.
“I just wanna thank those who’ve genuinely prayed for @morganakamomo & myself through out this pregnancy,” Goodwin wrote. “Unfortunately we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4am. Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan. The pain (physically, mentally, & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please Pray for the Goodwin family.”
His wife Morgan also shared a touching tribute on Instagram, posting a picture of her baby boy’s hand resting on a heart-shaped pillow.
“This whole week has taken an emotional toll on my husband and I, struggling to keep our healthy baby safe in my womb,” she wrote. “However, God had other plans for us. Today, I had to deliver my precious baby boy early this morning due to preterm labor. Despite our loss, my hubby kept grinding, scored his son a touchdown & got our first ‘W’ of the season. He had a wonderful game today. I️ appreciate everyone who kept us in their prayers and constantly checked in on us.”
I can’t imagine the heartache these parents must be facing following the loss of their precious son. It’s hard to fathom, too, how difficult it must have been for Goodwin to play so soon after his personal tragedy. Then again, everyone processes grief differently. So maybe the routine of the game and support of his teammates is exactly what he needed at the time.
“I have so much respect for him, to come out here and still play, with the hurt that he had in his heart, and to ball out,” 49ers safety Eric Reid told SFGate.com.
Still, I’d like to think if it playing had been too much for the bereaved father, his team would have been more than fine with Goodwin sitting that game out. My thoughts are with the grieving family during this difficult time.
