It can be tempting to think that a smack sorts out disobedience or bad behaviour in a child, however it does nothing to teach your child how you want him or her to behave.
Instead, it:
* Gives a bad example of how to handle strong emotions;
* May lead children to hit or bully others;
* May encourage children to lie or hide feelings to avoid being smacked;
* Can make defiant behaviour worse, so discipline gets even harder;
* Can lead to a resentful and angry child and damaged family relationships if it continues for a long time.
10 Tips How To Discipline Without Smacking:
1. Give love and warmth as much as possible;
2. Have clear and simple rules and limits;
3. Be a good role model and set an example;
4. Praise good behaviour so it will increase;
5. Ignore behaviour you don’t want repeated;
6. Criticise behaviours, not your child;
7. Reward good behaviour with hugs and kisses;
8. Distract young children or use humour to put a stop to bad behaviour;
9. Allow children some control and a role in joint decision making;
10. If a punishment is necessary, remove privileges such as TV or play time, or put the child in ‘time out’ and explain why and how they can have privileges restored.
